As opposed to yesterday’s charity game, today the Mariners’ real practice games count, so Yuniesky Betancourt will start. You have to scroll past the announcements that Erik Bedard, Kenji Johjima, Raul Ibanez, and Richie Sexson will also start. Fifth billing ain’t bad. Too bad he’s going to hit ninth, behind Woodinville High School’s own Matt Tuiasosopo. Starting for the San Francisco Giants is UW Husky alum Tim Lincecum. Game time: high noon.

In other news:
Rich Amaral is teaching Yuni and other M’s how to steal bases. As a child during the Ken Griffey, Jr. years, which I prefer to call the Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball years, I have an inflated sense of how great Rich Amaral was as a player For instance, you should always start him over Bret Boone. This fandom also applies to Brian Turang. And if you don’t remember Amaral and Turang from Ken Griffey Baseball, well, you need to edit your rosters. (I turned the Montreal Expos into my sixth grade class.)

Yuni can’t bunt: The M’s were doing bunting drills, and Yuni “got his first two bunts into the circles the other day, then missed on his next two dozen.” One of the better bunters on the team? Richie Sexson. All of a sudden he’s good at making contact?

Willie Bloomquist went 0 for 2 yesterday. Just saying. He was replaced in the sixth inning by Mark Kiger, who managed to get a hit. Haven’t heard of Mark Kiger? You shouldn’t have. He was signed in January. His lone interesting fact: In 2006, he became the first player since Bug Holliday in 1885 to make his Major League debut during the playoffs. That’s what Wikipedia says, though of course in 1885 Major League Baseball didn’t exist. Mark Kiger doesn’t care, he just wanted to be a defensive replacement for D’Angelo Jimenez.
