…or maybe he’s a bad fielder October 2, 2007

Today Dave Cameron at USSM looks at the Mariners’ fielding, and rates Yuni as a slightly below average shortstop.
The numbers (revised Zone Rating) at Hardball Times back this up.
What doesn’t, though, is prescription-enhanced eyesight. And it’s not just my vision, it’s everybody’s. Tango Tiger has hosted a “wisdom of crowds” scouting ballot/metric where fans rate defensive players, and last year Yuni came out as the third best shortstop, behind only Adam Everett and Omar Vizquel. And who wrote a nice write-up on Yuniesky? Dave Cameron. (Scroll down here.) Dave even calls him the Cuban Cannon, which is the best nickname for him I’ve heard.
In that USSM post’s comments, Dave does cite Yuni’s 23 errors this season. Yes, that’s bad, but he did turn it around, with only 4 errors after the all-star break.
But who’s right, the numbers, our eyes, or my emotional attachment?
